ECHO advisory committee to meet Wednesday to consider $3.79M worth of community projects

DELAND -- The Volusia County Environmental, Cultural, Historical, and Outdoor Recreation (ECHO) advisory committee will meet from 3 - 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 13, in the Volusia County Council chambers of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W.Indiana Ave.

The committee will review and consider the eligibility of the following applicants for the 2010 grant cycle:

- City of New Smyrna Beach, Cross Volusia Trail: $281,853;

- City of Port Orange, Russell Landing: $100,000;

- Wildlife Foundation of Florida, Mosquito Lagoon Marine Enhancement Center: $600,000;

Sheriff's Office searching for dead Orange City woman's missing vehicle

ORANGE CITY -- Volusia County Sheriff's investigators are searching for a vehicle missing from the home of an Orange City woman found dead Tuesday afternoon.

The 51-year-old victim, identified as Rabbitt Burns, was found dead Tuesday afternoon inside her home on West Fern Drive just south of Orange City.

Concerned co-workers who came to the victim's home to check on her well-being peered through a window and saw the woman on the ground, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

Brangaccio receives $120K salary as new city manager

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- City Commissioner Judy Reiker brought up the artificial Christmas tree on Canal Street as a comparative difference in justifying the difference between the $120,000 salary City Manager Pam Brangaccio ultimately received Tuesday night, which was $10,000 more than what the elected body sought to pay her just a week ago.

NSB Commissioner Jim Hathaway 'embarrassed' by $59K severance given dismissed planner Mark Rakowski

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Developmental Services Director Mark Rakowski saw his job eliminated last month, but he won't have to wait in an umemployment line any time soon.

NSBNEWS.net obtained his severance amount through a public records request, showing he was paid a whopping $59,703.23.

When informed of the payout and the breakdown in costs for Rakowski, the city's chief planner, City Commissioner Jim Hathaway said he was "embarrassed."

"Giving him a whole year's income to look for another job -- it's crazy," said Hathaway, the senior member of the commission in his 15th year.
