DAYTONA BEACH -- Police Chief Mike Chitwood has found himself in the spotlight on many occasions in dealing with seedy crimes in the underbelly of Daytona Beach, with its sandpaper-faced street bums, hookers and drug peddlers along Ridgewood Avenue. But the last thing he thought he'd find himself front in center on was the Caylee Anthony saga.

NSB cops' SWAT team executes search warrant in drug case; woman arrested

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Officers from the New Smyrna Beach Police Department concluded a narcotics investigation early this morning when members of the agency, with the assistance of the Department's SWAT team, executed a search warrant at 808 E. 26th Ave., police spokesman Sgt. Michael Brouillette said.

During the search warrant, Cassie L. Holmes, 20, of the same address, was arrested on charges of possession of Ambien, a Schedule IV Controlled Substance, felony possession of Cannabis and possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Virginia Larzelere, the condemned mastermind behind the 1991 shotgun slaying of her Edgewater dentist-husband for a $2.1 million life insurance payout was all smiles Aug. 1, at the Justice Center because even though she was sentenced to life in prison, the death penaty was no longer at play.

DAYTONA BEACH -- In the waning three hoyurs of the 47th Rolex 24 At Daytona, four teams are battling right down to the wire in America's premier sports car race. Buddy Rice leading in the No. 58 Brumos Racing Porsche RIley, is being chased by the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates driver Scott Pruett, Pedro Lamy in the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Ford Dallara, and Terry Borcheller in the No. 59 Brumos Racing Porsche Riley, according to a Rolex press release race recap.

DAYTONA BEACH -- David Donohue passed Juan Pablo Montoya with 39 minutes remaining and held on to win the 47th Rolex 24 At Daytona - on the 40th anniversary of his father, Mark Donohue's, victory in the 1969 event, according to a post-race Rolex press release.

DAYTONA BEACH -- Michael Phelps was the big star of the Summer Olympics in Beijing, but local son Ryan Lochte, the 24-year-old Spruce Creek High School and University of Florida graduate, was pretty good, too, winning a gold with Phelps and an individual gold in the 200-meter backstroke -- beating the world record.
