BREAKING NEWS: New Smyrna Beach Cops: Known drug peddler gunned down on front porch under cover of darkness

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- A known drug peddler was gunned down on a porch under the cover of darkness and cops had little, if anything, to go on in way of suspects or a motive in this popular tourist-driven beachfront city known for its charm.

Around 3:15 a.m., Deputy Lewis noticed a car in the Circle K parking lot (2095 E. New York Ave., DeLand) sitting with its driver door open. Inside, a male driver and female front-seat passenger were unconscious. The windows on the vehicle were fogged up, indicating the vehicle had been sitting for an extended amount of time. Upon further observation, Deputy Lewis observed an infant child (approximately 8 months old) asleep in a car seat in the rear middle passenger seat. Deputy Lewis observed the child to be sweating profusely.

This is the first of three profiles on the Headline Surfer Newsmakers of the Year. This segment features Volusia County Sheriff's Deputy Blaine Lewis, who, on Oct. 24, came to the aid of an 8-month-old baby. The second segment features New Smyrna Beach Police Detective Nikki Diffin, whose intervention also saved a baby from physical abuse by a drug-dependent mother. These two women cops share the Headline Surfer award for Newsmaker of the Year.
