Fugitive wanted by feds on fraud charges arrested in New Smyrna Beach

(Courtesy photo). Albert Edward Gilner, 74, of New Smyrna Beach, has been arrested on federal warrants charging him with multiple counts of wire and mail fraud as well as money laundering.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A New Smyrna Beach man wanted by U.S. Postal Service on fraud charges has been apprehended with the help of a police detective here,

The feds were able to track down 74-year-old Albert Edward Gilner, arresting him 9:20 a.m. Friday at his residence, 1412 S. Riverside Drive, on warrants charging him with four counts of wire fraud, three counts of mail fraud, and one count of money laundering.

New Smyrna Beach Police Detective Lisa Gundrum was instrumental in making the arrest happen, having worked with federal investigators since 2008.

In the larger photo, David Swentor, developer of the proposed 112-room Hampton Inn on Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach, addresses the City Commission, with attorney Glenn Storch by his side, implores officials to grant him an additional six months to secure funding, saying his project was negatively impacted by the city's planning debacle. Commissioner Jim Hathaway opposes any extension at all.

Volusia Sheriff's Office: Edgewater meth lab busted; resident arrested

(Courtesy photo) A traffic stop led Sherioff's deputies to the Edgewater home of Randy Freeman, who was alledgedly running a meth lab.

EDGEWATER --  An Edgewater man was stopped Tuesday night for having a revoked license during what started as a routine traffic stop. However, drug paraphernalia was discovered in plain view in his car, which led to further investigation revealing materials commonly associated with a meth lab in his home, a Volusia County Sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Randy Freeman, 29, was arrested and taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.

The New Smyrna Beach High School fight song resonated throughout the City Commission chambers Tuesday night as band members paid tribute to the city police department and city officials for their efforts in purchasing new band uniforms this year.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH - A labor agreement with Teamsters Local No. 385. on a new police contract that will run retroactive from Oct. 1 of this year,  through Sept, 30, 2013, with the city expecting to save almost $162,000 in one year, is expected to be voted on tonight by the City Commission.
