Father charged with giving false statement after toddler shoots himself

DELTONA -- Volusia County Sheriff's investigators filed a criminal complaint affidavit Thursday with the State Attorney's Office charging 24-year-old Brandon Cardona with child neglect, leaving firearms within access of a minor and other felonies, two days after his 3-year-old son accidentally shot himself with a gun that resulted in a light grazing of the boy's chest, a Sheriff's spokesman said.

DELTONA -- Sheriff's investigators filed a criminal complaint affidavit Wednesday with the State
Attorney's Office charging 29-year-old Tracy DeCarr, the mother of the 3-year-old injured in Tuesday's accidental shooting incident, with child neglect and leaving firearms within access of a minor.

"The toddler squeezed the trigger and the weapon discharged, causing a grazing wound to the chest," Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said of the 9:22 a.m. Tuesday incident. "Family members drove the boy to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City."

Marijuana growing operation found in Deltona

DELTONA -- Volusia County narcotics agents found 416 marijuana plants in three homes in Deltona during raids yesterday and earlier today, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. The plants have an approximate combined street value of more than $900,000. A man in one home was arrested, and an investigation is ongoing to find any other people who were involved in the grow operation, Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

Former South Daytona Mayor Joe Piggotte dies at 81

SOUTH DAYTONA -- Former South Daytona Mayor Joe Pigotte died Tuesday evening at the Hospice Care Center in Port Orange. He was 81.

The South Daytona "Coach" Joe Piggotte Community Center, 504 Big Tree Road, is named for the former coach at Mainland High School in Daytona Beach and then Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange.

Piggotte, a native of Alabama was a South Daytona councilman before becoming mayor, 1988 to 2005. He was the father of Circuit Judge Juliane Piggotte and Spruc CrekkHigh SchoolAsst. Principal Joey Piggotte.

Sheriff: Elderly husband charged in Deltona wife's murder earlier today -- accused says wife no longer had will to live with illness

DELTONA -- The Volusia County Sheriff's Office this afternoon arrested Robert Benjo of Deltona on a charge of second-degree murder in the shooting death of his 76-year-old wife.
 
The 82-yer-old husband was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach, where he was booked in at 5:10 p.m. and is being held without bond.

Deltona man killed in three-wheel kit motorcycle accident

DELTONA -- A 25-year-old man was killed late Tuesday afternoon after he lost control of a three-wheel kit motorcycle in Deltona, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported.

The bike, which has an open-air vehicle cabin built onto the motorcycle chassis, flipped while turning onto Pilgrim Avenue from Normandy Boulevard and ended up in a residential driveway, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

Deltona man dies in motorcylce crash

DELTONA -- A 23-year-old city man was killed Saturday when he lost cotrol of his motorcycle while speeding and struck his head on a fence post, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported. He was not wearing a helmet.

Eustis Avenue "at a high rate of speed," according to a Sheriff's report.
 

Deltona man charged with atacking 14-year-old girl

DELTONA -- A 19-year-old man was charged Wednesday with attempted sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl with a knife near the Deltona Library, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office reported.

A passerby frightened off the attacker after she screamed for help, a sheriff's spokesman said.
