$140,000 raised by Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation at dinner/auction with NASCAR driver Austin Dillion the featured speaker

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Stewart-Marchman-Act Foundation raised nearly $140,000 at its annual Dinner Celebration and Auction featuring NASCAR driver Austin Dillon at the Daytona 500 Club at Daytona International Speedway, event organizers said.

This year's big draw was Austin Dillon, driver of the No. 3 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing. The funds raised came through sponsorships, live auction sales and tickets for prizes.

DAYTONA BEACH Fla. – After receiving more than 200 applications, Daytona State College has selected Erik Pastrana as the Falcon’s new head men’s basketball coach. Pastrana, who spent the last year as an assistant coach at Florida International University, brings a decade of experience as an assistant in both NJCAA and NCAA play to his first head coaching position.

DAYTONA DYNASTY: DSC women’s golf team wins 9th championship in 13 years

BRASELTON, Ga. – After teeing off for four days at the Chateau de Elan Resort in Braselton, Ga, Daytona State College claimed its ninth title in 13 seasons at the NJCAA Women’s Golf National Championships. Under the direction of Head Coach Laura Brown, the Falcons scored 1191 over four rounds to finish 55 over par, besting their closest competition by 14 strokes. 

Always Dreaming wins 143rd Ketucky Derby on rain-soaked track

Always Dreaming prevailed in the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby, winning on a rain-soaked muddy track at Churchill Downs in Louisville by 2¾ lengths with jockey John Velazquez on board. 

At 9-2 odds, Always Dreaming was the pre-race favorite and did not disappoint, settling for the inside track early on and in second before Velasquez steered him to the front pretty quickly.

"He was running so gpod down the stretch," Velasquez said as Always Dreaming stayed the course up front.

This was the fifth consecutive Kentucky Derby that the pre-race favorite prevaild. Finishing in second a third, respctively were longshots: Lookin At Lee at 33-1, and Battle of Midway at 40-1. Velasqurez was pleased with the run by Always Dreaming, an 1¼ miles in 2:03.59 and paid $11.40, $7.20 and $5.80.

"This is the best horse (trainer) Todd (Pletcher) and I have ever come to the Kentucky Derby with,'' Velazquez said. "Being behind me for 24 years together, a long time for him to still trust in me and give me the opportunity, it's not very often it happens in this business.''
