Server shot dead at DeBary Burger King

A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy walks inside the crime scene tape outside the Burger King parking lot in DeBary on Monday afternoon following a bloody situation inside where a man shot a server multiple times at point-blank range, killing her.

DEBARY -- The corner of Dirken Drive and Sunrise Boulevard in this quiet enclave off exit 108 of Interstate 4 sits a Burger King, where customers come and go, through the drive-thru with the normal hustle and bustle of fast food. All of that changed in the flash of a gun blast this morning with the server falling back from the counter and her attacker jumping over and unloading several more rounds while standing over her, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said.

The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Heidi Shelmire and her accused killer is Jesus Morales, 41, who is charged with first-degree premeditated murder.

DEBARY -- Several families are in mourning with two dead and three other young people injured early Tuesday when an 18-year-old lost control of his SUV, which rolled over and burst into flames Monday morning on Fort Florida Road in what is likely the most horrific traffic accident of the new year.

The driver of the vehicle, 18-year old Joshua Ritter, was being treated at Halifax Medical Center. Ryan Jenkins, 17, a passenger, was being treated at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City. A second passenger, 18-year old Kenyanna Hawkins, was being treated at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford. The extent of their injured were not known, authorities said.

DEBARY -- A precautionary boil-water notice was lifted today for 33 homes on Jasmine and Bougainvillea drives and Lupine and Larkspur lanes.

The boil-water notice had been issued Monday after county crews discovered a break in a three-inch water main. The main has been repaired.

Utilities crews shut off water today to make repairs on a three-inch water main break. Residents are advised to bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute before using it for drinking, cooking or ice-making. It is not necessary to boil water for showering or other external uses.

Sheriff's Office: Orange City woman, 42, struck and killed after stepping in front of car on poorly lit road early Saturday in DeBary

DEBARY -- A 42-year-old Orange City woman was struck and killed early Saturday after she sudenly stepped in front of a car on South Charles R. Beall Boulevard just a little south of its intersection with Dirksen Drive, a Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman said.

Sherrie Ann Morrison was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:49 p.m. moments after stepping in front of a 2000 4-door BMW 528i, witnesses told responding deputies. No charges were filed against 41-year-old Corey Manuel of DeBary, who was uninjured and alone.
