Deputies: Not the 1st time this has happened

ORMOND BEACH -- Volusia County Sheriff's deputies arrested a 63-year-old woman on Friday with child neglect after she left a 2-year-old girl alone in her car while she went shopping for groceries. And witnesses told deputies this wasn't the first time.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A metamorphosis of the Southeast Volusia Hospital District governing board is on the fast track with Gov. Scott on Wednesday announcing the immediate appointments of Joseph Benedict, Patrick E. Corbett, and Harold "Derwin" Smothers as members whose terms run through March 15, 2015.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a tornado warning for greater New Smyrna Beach and Port Orange until 6:30 p.m.

A dangerous cell is moving south from Daytona to New Smyrna Beach, unincorporated Samsula and Edgewater. There is a lot of ligtning and some reports of hail associated with this thunderstorm.

PORT ORANGE -- Police have identified the woman found murdered early this morning in her Sunset Cove Drive home as 53-year-old Laura J. Hill and that the medical examiner's office determined she was killed by "blunt force trauma," meaning she was likely beaten to death.

Her daughter, 25-year-old Angela M. Hill, found serious injured, but conscious, by Port Orange police officers shortly after 2 a.m. underwent surgery at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach and is listed in critical, but stable condition in the intensive care unit.

Port Orange police were alerted by the Sheriff's Office in West Baton Rouge, La., that there had been a high-speed chase on Interstate 10 resulting in a crash and that the two men inside the vehicle were apprehended.

PORT ORANGE -- One woman in her mid 50s was found murdered early this morning and her grown daughter critically injured inside their home in the 3800 block of Sunset Cove Drive, Port Orange police said.

The crime scene was discovered at 2:10 a.m., when police went to the home in the Sunset Cove subdivision at the request of the Sheriff's Office in West Baton Rouge, La. Officials in Baton Rouge were out with a crashed vehicle they had apparently pursued on Interstate 10 with the murder suspects inside.

DAYTONA BEACH -- The number of people killed on the roadways of Volusia County stands at two with the most recent a 56-year-old Port Orange motorcyclist in a crash near Daytona Beach on Sunday afternoon, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

William Lee Hughes was riding his 18981 BMW motorcycle northbound on north on Tomoka Farms Road when he was struck by motorist Lakecia Harris in a 2007 Chevrolet, who ran a red light at the intersection while heading west on International Speedway Boulevard, troopers said. Hughes was thrown from his bike and pronounced dead at the scene of the 3:34 p.m. accident.

PORT ORANGE -- The SWAT team was called out after a 20-year-old man barricaded himself in his Floral Springs Boulevard apartment with his two roommates inside and threatened to kill himself Friday afternoon. Neighboring residences were evacuated and the young man was talked into surrendering peacefully to a hostage negotiator, Port Orange police said.
