15-year-old Edgewater boy bitten by shark in NSB surf

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 15-year-old Edgewater boy surfing near the South Jetty was bitten on the left foot by a shark after stepping on it while falling off his surfboard, the Volusia County Beach Patrol reported.

Because the boy stepped on the shark, the Beach Patrol is treating it as a "provoked" attack since the shark bit as a result of being hit first.

The boy, Troy Zettle was bitten a couple of times after stepping on the shark when he got his footing and the shark circled around and bit him a couple of times  Beach Patrol spokesman Scott Petersohn said, adding this was the second provoked attack by a human resulting in a shark bite so far among the 14 attacks this year.

The boy was taken to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach by friends for stitches and possible tendon damage.
