Rabies alert for a portion of Volusia lifted

DELAND -- The 60 day rabies alert issued by the Volusia County Health Department on April 14 following two unprovoked attacks on humans by raccoons has been lifted.

Stefany Strong of the Health Department says there have been no additional positive animals or attacks on humans or pets by potentially rabid animals in the alert area during the past 60 days. The rabies alert area encompassed sections of Port Orange, South Daytona and unincorporated parts of Volusia County in an area bounded on the north by Beville Road, south by Madeline Avenue, east by Nova Road and west by Clyde Morris Boulevard.

Rabies is a disease of the nervous system and is fatal to warm blooded animals and humans. The only treatment for human exposure to rabies is rabies specific immune globulin and rabies immunization. Appropriate treatment started soon after the exposure, will protect an exposed person from the disease.

While the rabies alert has expired, people are still urged to protect themselves from possible rabies exposure.
