Peter Jim Hargis, 78, of New Smyrna Beach, FL passed away on Monday, July 12, 2010. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Beverly Hargis; their 5 children, Jim, Michael, Sherrie, Kenneth and Stacey; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and a large extended family. Pete was born August 13, 1931 in Greenville, Mississippi.
He served in the US Navy from 1951 to 1955 as an Aircraft Mechanic. Following his tour of service, he attended Stetson University, which led to a 26 year career as a Choral Director at Colonial High School in Orlando, FL. Pete retired from teaching in 1985 but remained active in his church choir.
In addition to his love of music, he enjoyed fishing, nature, history and sharing stories with his family and friends. He was loved and respected by many. He will be deeply missed by all who have known him. To this day his passion for music lives on in the hearts of both his children and his students.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 15 at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home located at 406 S. Orange Street, New Smyrna Beach, FL. 32168. Funeral and burial will be private.
