SAMSULA -- School supporters and parents are organizing the third annual Fall Festival Fundraiser to benefit Samsula Academy. The event, hosted at SNPJ Lodge, 421 N. Samsula Drive is slated to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Festivities include music, game booths and food.
“We started this event a few years ago in an effort to save Samsula Elementary,” said Trent Johnston, event organizer and Samsula Academy advisory board member.
“Reading Edge Academy came into our community and is delivering a quality education to our children in our local school. We need to raise funds to continue to raise the quality of our child’s education. The event is a visible symbol of the support our school enjoys from the community.”
A barbeque dinner is set for 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children under age 12. Game tickets are 50 cents each. Tickets are available the day of the event or at the school office, 248 N. Samsula Dr., Samsula during the week.
“Our goal is to raise $5,000,” said Samsula Academy Principal Peggy Comardo. “We have a long wish list that includes multi-media equipment, computers and scholarships.”
Samsula Academy was opened in 2008 in response to the community’s outcry over the closing of our long-standing public school, Samsula Elementary. Samsula Academy, a charter school operated by The Reading Edge Academy, is dedicated to launching children's academic careers with success, confidence, and a love for reading. A charter school is a public school of choice, owned and operated by a not for profit corporation (Reading Edge Academy Inc.)
“We believe that we offer a private school education at a public school price,” said Comardo. “Samsula Academy is a safe place to learn, where people are kind. Consideration, kindness, and forgiveness are the usual way of life. Real laughter comes from sharing meaningful work and play, and the rules are few but fair. The program of the school is built upon research-based concepts.”
Samsula Academy serves children in grades Kindergarten through fifth, with instruction in: Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Art, and Music. Our vision and purpose is to ensure a firm foundation in all core subjects.
As a Volusia County Charter School, The Reading Edge Academy/ Samsula Academy is accountable for each child's academic progress to the state through the Volusia County School Board. The Reading Edge Academy/ Samsula Academy is funded with state and federal money as are all public schools. Students take the Florida Comprehensive Achievements Tests (FCAT).
