The United Church of Christ, 203 Washington St., New Smyrna Beach, is making preparations for the opening of the Community Farmers Market on the church grounds.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The New Smyrna Beach Farmers Market will have new competition Saturday morning, and each Saturday morning thereafter, when the United Church of Christ begins its own Community Farmers Market on the church grounds.
Twenty-six spaces will be available for vendors from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Sharon and Barry Sturms of New Smyrna Beach are the organizers of the new market and believe their venue will enhance the shopping experience for everyone in their quest to find the freshest vegetables, including organically-grown, the most artistic crafts, and the fanciest jewelry.
"One thing we want to stress is that we will not duplicate what our vendors are selling," Sharon Sturms said. "It's not fair for a vendor to set up next to another one selling the same product."
Market organizers said they will also provide a free vendor space to public service-oriented organizations, such as The Salsa King. The company hires mentally challenged adults to help make their salsa, sauce and dip. Proceeds from the sale of those products will be given to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation in Daytona Beach.
"We want to give back to the community," church manager Sammy Hartwell said.
The United Church of Christ is located at the intersection of Washington and Faulkner streets.
