NEW SMYRNA BEACH – The City Commission will hold its first meeting of the new year at 6:30 tonight with an expected vote to tear down the former police and fire department facilities on Industrial Park Avenue.

The razing  will be done, if aproved, by DBI Demolition, the same company that knocked down the former Dunn Lumber building, at a cost of $46,410.

There are five requests for special events in the city that require street closures and other city in-kind services. They include:

  • * The Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce Home Show and Business Expo scheduled for Jan. 22, with a portion of Canal Street from Orange Avenue to Magnolia Avenue being closed;
  • * “Go Dog Go” 5K Run, Dog Dash and Pet Walk, Jan. 22 with a rolling barricade;
  • * IMAGES: A Festival of the Arts, Jan. 28-30, Riverside Drive, Canal Street, Anderson Street and Magnolia Avenue;
  • * Black Heritage Festival, Feb. 4-6, Pettis Park; and “Heart 2 Heart” Fitness Challenge, Feb. 12 with a rolling barricade.

Commissioners will consider adopting a resolution that would recommend HIHO, LLC, developers of the Hampton Inn on Flagler Avenue, be approved as a Qualified Target Industry Business and consider waiving local financial support.

Developers say they wish to take advantage of the incentives provided by the state for the development of properties within a designated brownfield area. The city had designated the CRA area on Flagler as a brownfield area through a resolution adopted in August 2009.

In other business, commissioners will also conduct the second reading and final public hearing of an ordinance, if adopted, would rezone 135 acres, located south of Turnbull Bay Road and west of Tionia Road, from residential planned unit development and conservation to planned unit development zoning district, as well as approving the Sugar Mill Estates planned unit development master development agreement and conceptual development plan.

New ordinances being considered on first reading include amending land development regulations. One is to expand the CRA special parking district and the other to consider as buildable any lot platted as part of a recorded subdivision providing that zoning district requirements are met.

The commisioners will reconvene 3:30 p.m. Wednesday  with the Community Redevelopment Agency board in the Commission Chamber at City Hall.

The CRA will meet with commissioners following their regular meeting to discuss alleviating current parking requirements, an independent business move-in program, policies covering business assistance development, and new parking lots.

An update on the wayfinding signage program from Bellomo Herbert will also be heard.
