NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Arts lovers Tod and Amanda Chismark of Port Orange had no problem plunking down a grand on artwork at the Atlantic Center for the Arts' annual "Horsin' Around" on Sunday.
"The art was a steal," the husband said. After $125 for the entry fee, Chismark and his wife competed in a series of silent auctions for all kinds of artwork, ranging from $40 to $5,000.
In all, the nearly 500 people in attendance collerctively spent $125,000. And that was music to ACA Co-Director Nancy Lowden Norman, who said $50,000 of that ill go to children's programs.
This important fundraiser raises 15% of Atlantic Center’s operating budget, allowing for arts-related programming to underserved youth, writing residencies for teens, opportunities for working artists to create new work through the center's acclaimed residency programs, and educational lectures and performances for the greater Central Florida community, serving 50,000 yearly.
Norman and Jim Frost, another organizer of the event, said they were especially thrilled with the money rasised for aspiring child artists.
"It's just amazing," Norman said of the funding, especially in this entrenched recession. The outer grounds of the New Smyrna Beach Airport became a makeshift galleria with arts lovers from across Central Florida putting in their bids for pottery, paintings, wood carvings and other works of art.
Asked if $1,000 might be excessive," Tod Chismark said, ""We love the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Anything like this that helps children is worth it."
