NEW SMYRNA BEACH — Bert Fish Medical Center will host a special community event emphasizing stroke prevention and stroke awareness on Wednesday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Schildecker Lobby of the hospital, 401 Palmetto St.
This event is being held in conjunction with May’s designation as National Stroke Awareness Month. It also marks the one year anniversary of Bert Fish Medical Center’s designation as a Joint Commission Certified Primary Stroke Center. The hospital will be presented with the Bronze Performance Achievement Award from The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® program at the event, recognizing the hospital for using evidence-based guidelines to provide the best possible care to patients.
Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a leading case of adult disability, yet the American Stroke Association estimates fewer than one in five people in the U.S. can recognize a symptom of a stroke.
A community service of Bert Fish Medical Center, this event will feature free health screenings including stroke risk assessments, blood pressure checks, and pulse oximeter readings, along with stroke education to help bring attention to basic stroke facts. Dr. Glenn Kolluri, the stroke center’s medical director, will be doing a special presentation on “New Therapies in Stroke Care.”
Screenings and refreshments will begin at 10 a.m. with the awards presentation at 11 a.m. in the Schildecker Lobby. Screenings will continue until 12 noon. Dr. Kolluri’s presentation will take place in the Board Room at 11:30 a.m. Due to limited seating those wishing to attend the presentation need to register by calling (386) 424-6550.
