DAYTONA BEACH -- New Smyrna Beach High Senior Class President Imran Lufi missed out on Homecoming where he was named king because of appendicitis.

There was no way he'd miss the chance Saturday to say a final farewell to his 399 classmates at the 2011 graduation ceremony at the Ocean Center.

Lufi, very popular with his classmates, was intimate with them, saying, "Let's have a talk. You and me, mano y mano."

He made joking references to the "Brady Bunch" and the "Jersey Shore" as fictitious images while making a point of responsibilities to loved ones.

"Be honest and true to your friends and family. They will need you and you will need them."

Graduating means "the majority of us will grow up," the class president said, where they will ultimately be responsible for writing checks, paying their own cell phone bills and pleasing their parents by getting their own car insurance.

Lufi encouraged his classmate to make the most of life while giving back to the community and honestly representing their culture, home and family.

"Enjoy the ride," he said. "Enjoy the pursuit of happiness. Be honest and safe."
