Daytona Beach Shores cops: Student suffers broken leg after being hit by motorist who fails to stop for flashing school bus

Daytona Beach Shores child struck getting off bus / Headline SurferDAYTONA BEACH SHORES -- An Atlantic High School student suffered a broken leg when he was struck by a motorist in an SUV in the 3000 block of South Atlantic Avenue this afternoon, Daytona Beach Shores cops said.

"The student’s leg was fractured and he suffered other non-life threatening injuries," Detective Sgt. Michael Fowler said in a brief media release to Headline Surfer that did not include the boy's name or age.

The victim was treated by Daytona Beach Shores EMS personnel and transported to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. He's the ninth Volusia County student struck by a motorist while either walking to or from school or a bicycle, but the first struck while getting off a stopped school bus with its flashers activated.

Here is a synopsis of the 3:30 p.m. accident as described by Fowler: "A male Atlantic High School student attempted to cross the 3000 block of South Atlantic Avenue after exiting a school bus. According to witnesses, the bus had its flashers and stop sign activated. William Sullivan of Ormond Beach, 23 years of age, failed to stop for the bus while driving southbound in a 2005 Chevrolet SUV. Witnesses observed the vehicle strike the student in the far western most lane of South Atlantic Avenue."

A crash investigation was conducted and Sullivan was issued traffic citations alleging he passed a stopped school bus, failed to carry motor vehicle insurance, and drove with faulty equipment -- a bald tire.

Sullivan was allowed to leave, but Fowler stressed "there are no criminal charges at this time."
