DAYTONA BEACH -- New Smyrna Beach Mayor Adam Barringer is far from alone among past or present elected officials in Volusia County with less than stellar driving records.

In the wake of his latest run-in with a New Smyrna Beach cop, Headline Surfer looked at driver-related offenses of County Council members.

Barringer acknowledged during his 2009, run for mayor that he had been arrested on a DUI charge in his early 20s, though he wasn't more specific and his opponent, then-Mayor Sally Mackay said she wouldn't make an issue of it.

In 2002, Mackay pleaded guilty to not wearing her seat belt after she was stopped by New Smyrna Beach cops and paid a $44 fine.

A review of public records from the Volusia Clerk of the Court shows only two current members of the County Council with clean driving records.
