NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- You'd think juggling a marriage, family and career would be enough to handle for Edgewater's Kerry-Anne Purkiss, but she takes motherhood to a whole new level as a community mentor to a dozen or so other children in the greater New Smyrna Beach.
As the founder and executive director of KC Society, Purkiss provides the love, guidance and secondary parent mentoring that some children in her program have come to enjoy and build off of in their own development as young people.
And while so many take Mother's Day for granted, Purkiss embraces it. "Happy Mothers Day to everybody in that role," Purkiss wrote on her Facebook page this beautiful Sunday morning, "for a mother is someone who raises a child to a successful adulthood with little to no scars -- and as a teacher I can truly say thanks to all those moms."

And while those accolades are befitting of Mother's Day, it is Purkiss who defines the statement in raising her own kids and helping others. She is truly deserving of the honor of this special day, not only for her maternal role within her nuclear family, but her extended mother hen role with KC Society.
She describes the organization and its purpose as follows: It's a 501c3 social entrepreneurial organization designed for teens to have a voice and flourish within a safe environment. We love teens. They are creative, imaginative 'and' ready to take action. 'Teens matter to us!' KC Society focuses on our teens' willingness to be better, act better, live better, and above all else, change in the wake of learning more. Our programs call our teens to take a proactive stance in their own life so that they can make a real impact within their environment. With a goal of making an impact everywhere -- we encourage them to live on purpose.
Purkiss fosters educational and community programs designed to give the teens in her group learning opportunities and personal growth that might not otherwise be available to them for one reason or another. To that end, she established a Youth Advisory Council and holds an annual Family Spring Festival on Canal Street in New Smyrna Beach to help generate revenue.
