DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Michael Chitwood, the mercurial Daytona Beach polioce chief, who once called retiring Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson a "moron," will take out qualifying papers next week seeking the elected law enforcement post in the 2016 elections, accordiong to an inside source.

"Chitwood is more than a rumor," the source said, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "He's announcing next week." Neither Chitwood nor Daytona Beach City Manager Jim Chisholm returned Headline Surfer messages for comment.

Announced candidates already announced are Johnson's chief deputy, Eric Dietrich, VCSO Capt. David Brannon and Wendell Bradford, retired Seminole Counrty sheriff's deputy abd former Pasco County Sheriff Jim Gillum who lives outside DeLand. None of them returned calls for comment on Chitwood's possible run.
