EDGEWATER -- A 53-year-old homeless DeLand man was found stabbed in the chest, with the knife still stuck in him last night, the Volusia Sheriff's Office reported, adding he remains hospitalized in stable condition today.
Edgewater Police initially responded to the call and found Robert Herron on the ground along the 3200 block of South Ridgewood Avenue, heavily bleeding and the knife in his chest, Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.
Paramedics with EVAC ambulance tended to the victim's wound and then transported him to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach. Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the scene at 8:22 p.m. and followed the blood trail for approximately 25 yards, into a wooded area where investigators believe the stabbing occurred with a 5-inch blade.
Deputies are still investigating, but have been unable to interview Herron because he is being sedated due to his injuries, Davidson said.
