NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- A 32-year-old New Smyrna Beach man was reported in critical condition today at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, after falling from the roof-top ledge of the Observer newspaper office, 508 Canal St., while bragging to friends he was going to skateboard off it.
Adrian Fair, of 721 Dougherty St., suffered critical head injuries in the 20-foot-plus drop onto the sidewalk just before 9:20 p.m.
New Smyrna Beach police officer B.A. wrote the following synopsis of what occurred based on statements he took from Robert Muncey, a friend of the victim: "(Muncey) and Mr. Fair were on the roof at 508 Canal Street smoking a cigarette, when Mr. Fair began to play on a skateboard... Fair climbed onto the edge of the roofand stated he was going to skate off the roof and onto the street... Fair then stated he was just kidding and handed (Muncey) the skateboard so he could climb down... Fair lost his footing and fell from the roof to the sidewalk below."
Muncey, 28, and Ronnie Muncey, 33, who live next door to the Observer where access to the roof was gained by an adjoining stairwell, were issed "no trespassing" warnings.
Police were called by Observer Editor Robert Burns who was working in his office when he heard the commotion on the roof. He requested the trespass warnings. Police said the men appeared to be drinking.
