DAYTONA BEACH -- Two Georgia chiropractors visiting the Daytona Beach area for Bike Week
were arrested by the Volusia County Motorcycle Anti-Theft Task Force Monday after investigators discovered that the vehicle identification numbers on their bikes had been altered, Volusia County Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.
David Nudelman, 31, and David Hershkowitz, 35, were both charged with grand theft auto and possession of a vehicle with an altered ID number.
"Task Force investigators patrolling Main Street at about 5 p.m. came across two men who acted suspiciously when the law enforcement officers came near them," Haught said. "The investigators then took a closer look at the public VINs on their motorcycles - a Kawasaki ZX-10 and a Yamaha R-1 - and saw that they had obviously been altered."
Further inspection of the bikes revealed their history of having been reported stolen in Georgia, Haught said: The Kawasaki's theft was reported in January, and the Yamaha was stolen in
2008.
Investigators seized the bikes and questioned the two men. The pair denied any knowledge of the bikes having been stolen.
"Nudelman said he had purchased the bikes, but couldn't remember when because it had been so long ago," Haught said. "Investigators then discovered that Hershkowitz was listed as a witness in the Yamaha theft, and that he was friends with the victim. Nonetheless, Hershkowitz still denied knowing that the Yamaha he rode had been stolen."
The men were transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
In addition to the recovery of the two Georgia motorcycles, three other
unrelated stolen bikes have been recovered so far during Bike Week 2010
by the Task Force. No other arrests have been made. The Volusia County
Motorcycle Anti-Theft Task Force is comprised of the Volusia County
