BREAKING NEWS: Armed standoff ends peacefully near DeLand

DELAND -- An armed standoff near DeLand ended peacefully this morning after Volusia County Sheriff's negotiators convinced James Fry to walk out ofhis house after he had threatened his wife with a gun, Volusia Sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said.

Deputies responded to 102 Kendra Ave. about 3:45 a.m. when Fry's wife, Lisa, called from a neighbor's house saying that James had fired a handgun in
their bedroom and then pointed the gun at her. No one was injured during the incident.

Lisa said that the couple had argued on their way home from a party where James had been drinking," Haught said. "The argument continued as they got home and went to bed. Lisa said she was trying to ignore James by watching television when she was startled by the sound of a gunshot. She rolled over in the bed to see James holding a gun that he had just fired into the ceiling. She said that he told her he could end it for her and then pointed the gun at her. Lisa got up, fled the house and went to a
neighbor's house to call for help.

Deputies responded and attempted to contact James on the phone, but he wouldn't answer. The Sheriff's Office SWAT team was called in along with negotiators. Local streets were closed during the next couple of hours, but no homes were evacuated. At 8 a.m. James walked out of the house and was safely taken into custody. James Fry was charged with aggravated assault and transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
