Brush fire near Lake Harney at 4,500 acres

OSTEEN -- Fire crews continue to work the lines around the 4,500-acre fire near the Lake Harney Woods subdivision. Today fire crews will continue to establish and widen lines around this growing fire.

In addition to the main fire, crews are plowing lines around a separate fire about a half-mile west of the large fire. This fire, which covers about 150 acres, began when a burning ember from the original fire was picked up by wind and traveled over the fire line. This fire is deep in the woods and not threatening any structures or roads.

Crews also are monitoring and widening lines around a third fire, the Canal Fire, a 277-acre fire that began April 26 at the Volusia/Brevard county line just west of I-95. No structures are threatened by this fire and no major roads are being impacted.

Working these three fires are public safety personnel from the Division of Forestry (day and night crews), Volusia County Fire Services, Volusia County Public Works, Volusia County Land Acquisition and Management, Volusia County Property Appraiser’s Office, and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Residents are advised to use caution when driving in these areas as these fires continue to produce smoke. They should not be alarmed by the smoke and should call 911 only if they see flames.

Residents are reminded that although there has been some rain in the afternoon, conditions are still extremely dry. Any outdoor fire at this time is dangerous. Residents are encouraged to practice fire safety around their homes and businesses.
