Brush fire in Osteen consumes 1,500 acres

OSTEEN -- Volusia County Fire Services received a call for a brush fire in the vicinity of Lake Harney Road and Underhill Branch Road in Osteen at 3:05 p.m. Saturday, that by the next day had consumed 1,500 acres.

No structures were threatened and no roads were closed.

Fire crews worked to cut lines around the fire and provide structural protection at Lake Harney Road and Underhill Branch Road. Winds are pushing the fire west/northwest toward Gobblers Lodge/Osteen-Maytown Road in Osteen, where more crews are working the fire and cutting lines.

Volusia County Public Works/Road and Bridge division crews have posted signs in the area, advising drivers of heavy smoke, particularly along Maytown-Osteen Road. Additionally, fire officials are asking motorists to use extreme caution on State Road 415 from Lake Ashby to Fort Smith Road as heavy smoke is also in that area. And, due to the high number of emergency vehicles staged on Maytown-Osteen Road, combined with smoke in the area, motorists are asked to take alternate routes around Maytown-Osteen Road when possible.

Nearly two dozen units units from Volusia County Fire Services; Division of Forestry; and Daytona Beach Fire, DeLand Fire, Deltona Fire and Ormond Beach Fire departments were
on scene at Gobblers Lodge, and 18 units from the same agencies were on scene at Lake Harney Road/Lake Underhill Road.
