Congressman Michael Waltz expected to attend tonight's West Volusia NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet in Deltona

DELTONA, Fla. -- The West Volusia Branch NAACP banquet committee is putting the finishing touches on its upcoming 29th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Saturday at The Center of Deltona.

The guest speaker is Hubert Grimes, a retired circuit judge and former acting presdident of Bethune-Cookman University,  and the Mistress of Ceremony is Barbara Girtman, the district 1 county councilwoman elected in 2016.

"The branch has confirmed that United States Congressman Michael Waltz will be in attendance for the event," said the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet's social media coordinator Vernon Moore in a Facebook post to Headline Surfer."

Waltz, the Army Green Beret war hero and author of the book, "Warrior Diplomat: A Green Beret's Battles from Washington to Afghanistan," was the overwhelming winner in the 2018 election for the 6th Congressional District over Democrat Nancy Soderberg.

 Local and regional corporations sponsoring tables for the NAACP dinner include Advent Health DeLand, Fish Memorial, UPS, and govrnments of DeLand, Deltona, and Volusia County. The VIP session and champagne toast was sold out two weeks ago and will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The Banquet and Awards Show will start promptly at 7 p.m. It will feature a delicious catered cuisine from Deltona’s Cocky Rooster Café. The Vibe Band will be coming off of the road and back home to be the musical guest for the evening. Awards will be given out to difference makers and trailblazers in the community.
