NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- The mean snarl was replaced with a big smile when 'Cudas football nose tackle Travis Kendrick was named Homecoming King at halftime of Friday's game against Merritt Island.
Kendrick, the monstrous lineman who enjoys crushing opposing offensive linemen and running backs who try to run up the middle, drew loud cheers from the more than thousand spectators who filled the bleachers against Merritt Island.
Even though the home team lost, 31-3, the half-time show was rocking with Courtney Sempsrott joining Kendrick as Homecoming Queen.
"I'm just in shock," said Kendrick, who had trouble keeping the crown on his large head as he smiled for the cameras alongside the much tinier queen. "I'm honored to be a part of this event."
Sempsrott was just as shocked as Kendrick to receive top honors: "It's crazy! So unexpected. I love Travis! He deserves it."
The initial cheers may have been a foreshadowing of what was to come as Kendrick, who remained in his football uniform, minus his helmet, drew the loudest cheers of the 10 boys and 10 girls announced as homecoming candidates.
When Kendrick's name was called the second time, the stands erupted. He lumbered forward with a huge grin -- his gigantic gloves tucked into his massive waistline.
The candidates for the Homecoming Court were presented during two assemblies Thursday at New Smyrna Beach High School.
Their parents attended those assemblies and were at the game as well. The winners were crowned by Kelly Conway, named New Smyrna Beach High's "Teacher of the Year."
Alumni were recognized at the football game while the court was presented on the field, surrounded by the marching band.
There was a potentially last-minute snafu avoided, said Kathy Bohman, co-sponsor of the senior class, along with Jan Stevens.
"Stephen Meerman was at the regional swim meet and made it onto the (football) field at the moment he and his partner, Taylor Yancey, were about to be announced, Bechtel said. "Perfect timing!"
Also on hand was Heather Bechtel, New Smyrna Beach High's 2007 Homecoming Queen.
Just as the second half was about to get under way, several of Travis Kendrick's teammates razzed him about mugging it up for the cameras.
"Come on! We've got a game to play!" yelled one of his teammates.
Kendrick put down his crown, put on his game face with a snarl and then his gargantuan helmet before making his way onto the gridiron.
