DELTONA -- Volusia County residents can gaze at the stars, learn about the winter solstice, and make holiday crafts at the Lyonia Environmental Center this month.
Educational programs include:
• “Star party” from 7 - 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10; and from 7 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 15: Join the LEC staff for a stargazing close-up view of the night sky. Staff will provide equipment and share their knowledge of the stars. This program is appropriate for ages 10 and up. Participants should dress for the outdoor weather. Participation is free with paid admission to the LEC.
• “Greening your holiday” Saturday, Dec. 12: Create crafts and holiday gifts from recycled materials. Children’s crafts will be from 9 a.m. - noon, and adult crafts will be from 1 - 4 p.m. The $12 fee includes craft materials and admission to the LEC. Participants may come early or stay afterward to learn about Florida scrub habitat.
• “Sunshine daydreams” from 9 - 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19: Learn about the winter solstice, Florida’s seasons, and the sun’s effects on ecosystems. This program, which is appropriate for ages 10 and up, will include an indoor presentation and hike through Lyonia Preserve. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes and bring water and bug spray. Participation is free with paid admission to the LEC.

Admission to the LEC is $5 for teenagers and adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for children ages 3 - 12, and free for children 2 and under. Annual memberships are available for $15 for students and senior citizens, $25 for individuals, and $45 for families.
The LEC is part of the Deltona Regional Library complex at 2150 Eustace Ave. It is open from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; from 9 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Thursdays; from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and from 1 - 5 p.m. Sundays.
