NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Fresh off his endorsement from the NewSmyrna BBeach Board of Realtors, mayoral candidate Chase Herbig will hold a meet and greet 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Garlic restaurant, 533 Third Ave. where he will discuss his platform for the future of this seaside city known for the Charm.
Herbig, 67, a native of Daytona Beach, has lived in New Smyrna Beach for 18 years. The only veteran among the six candidates running, Herbig served in the US Marine Corps and graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor of science degree in business management in 1979. He and his wife of 19 years, Star Herbig, are the owners of the HIG Insurance Group, one of the largest and most respected insurance agencies in Central Florida, including offices in New Smyrna Beach.
A member of the New Smyrna Beach Economic Development Advisory Board, Chase Herbig also supports the city as a member, contributor, and volunteer to multiple community and civic organizations. Herbig and five others are vying for the lead municipal post of mayor in New Smyrna Beach in the Aug. 28 primary.
"I need everyone's vote -- absentee ballots, early voting and the August 28 primary -- to allow me to roll up my sleeves as the next mayor and tackle the pressing issues that need real solutions," Herbig said, which he plans on discussing in outlining the key points of his platform in tonight's meet and greet session at the Garlic.

Should one of the six candidates receive at least 50 percent of the votes, plus one more vote in the primary election then that candidate becomes mayor-elect and takes office after the November elections. If none of the mayoral candidates reach that threshold in the primary, then the top two vote-getters will move on and face off in the general elections in November.
Herbig is a registered Republican, but the race for mayor is non-partisan, which means citizens of any political party, including NPAs, can vote in the primary if they register with the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections by Monday.
There is no incumbent running because Mayor Jim Hathaway has already announced he will not seek a third two-year term as mayor.
Herbig is the only candidate among the six to have the endorsement and support of a current office holder from New Smyrna Beach. Judy Reiker, a city commissioner since 2009, is not seeking re-election but has thrown her support behind Herbig with an endorsement and a contribution of $100 for his campaign.
