Gov. Charlie Crist's weekly (May 28) Notes from the Capitol:

Dear Friends,

With positive indicators beginning to appear in our economy, including increased home sales and consumer confidence, we must continue to keep Florida moving forward.

The budget I signed today focuses our resources on helping families in need and giving Florida businesses incentives and opportunities to expand and create jobs.

I have taken great care to fulfill my constitutional duty to evaluate each program, project and policy in the budget to ensure than no additional burden is placed on you – the people of Florida, as our economy recovers. You deserve every opportunity to shape the government that serves you and that you support with your taxes.

In only 4 days, Florida will once again begin another hurricane season, which means it is time for us to get ready. Though our goal in every situation is to get help to victims in Florida as soon as possible, let us remind each other to be prepared.

We must be sure to have necessary supplies for at least 3 days, ensuring that basic needs can be met immediately following a disaster. It is wise to keep an inventory of your supplies. Items like, canned food or other non-perishable food, and bottled water are best to have on hand. Batteries for radios, cell phones and flash lights are also helpful in those first few hours or days following a disaster.

A single storm can cause billions of dollars in damages, but it can also cost human lives. We know from experience that when people are adequately prepared it is much more likely they will be safer and have the ability to rebound more quickly than those who don’t take action ahead of time. We need to become more prepared and take personal responsibility this hurricane season.

By doing so, government will be able to focus on those who are most vulnerable and in need. We in Florida cannot emphasize enough the importance of being prepared and remaining vigilant.
