NSB officials brace for 2 more inches of rain in next 24 hours

NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- City officials are bracing for an additional two inches of rainfall over the next 24 hours, police spokesman Sgt. Michael Brouillette said at 5 p.m today.

That' in addition to the 16.35 inches that fell by 7 a.m. today since Sunday, as well as additional amounts sporadically during the day, according to reports from the National Weather Service in Melbourne. These totals are the highest in Volusia County, but still far less than 27 inches recorded in Bunnell in Flagler County.

SANDBAGS

* Sandbags are available to New Smyrna Beach residents at the Public Works Complex, 124 Industrial Park Ave., from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sandbags and sand are free,
but residents must bring their own shovel and fill bags themselves. There is a 20-bag maximum per family and identification will be required.

CITIZEN INFORMATION LINE

* A Citizen's Information Line will continue to be manned throughout the day and this evening. Residents with questions should call 424-2114.

ROAD CLOSURES

* Saxon Drive at 18th Avenue is currently under water and a detour is in place.

* S. Atlantic Ave. at 12th Avenue has water over the road, but is passable.

* S. Atlantic Ave. is closed at Columbus Ave. Detour is in place.

* N. Atlantic is closed from Florida Ave. to Crawford Rd. Detour is in place.

FLOOD DAMAGE

The City has conducted a preliminary damage assessment. As of 5 p.m., the initial assessment revealed that (12) twelve homes appeared to be damaged by floodwater. A detailed assessment will be available later tomorrow. The affected homes were in the following locations:

* 300-Block Cedar Ave.
* 400-Block Columbus
* 600-Block Goodwin Ave
* 500-Block Oakwood Ave.
* 300-Block Ocean Ave.
* 600-Block Pine St.
* 400-Block Quay Assisi
* 2000-Block Villa Way
* 200-Block Robert St.

GENERAL INFORMATION

* All questions related to water, sewer and electric should be directed to the Utilities Commission at 427-1361.

* After the storms pass, residents needing to have any work done to their homes and yards should hire only licensed and permitted contractors. Residents should ask to see the permit and license. If there are any questions, residents should call 424-2114 and the City will check the contractor's status.
