Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport up 23% in January compared to year earlier

Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport increased 23 percent in January compared to January of the previous year, Volusia County officials said.

During January, 34,514 passengers arrived and departed through the county-operated airport. This compares with the 28,102 travelers recorded in January last year. For the 12-month period ending January 31, 430,137 passengers traveled through DBIA, compared with 576,196 passengers in 2009, a 25-percent decrease.

The traffic increase in January follows a year-end upswing in 2009 when traffic increased 12 percent in November 2009 over November 2008 and 5 percent in December 2009 over December 2008.

The airport’s two major carriers -- Delta Air Lines and U.S Airways – also have scheduled more seats in the market over the next several months which should help local travelers, said Airport Director Rick Karl.

“We are extremely pleased with the January traffic increase and remain optimistic that as the economy improves, airport traffic will continue to improve over depressed levels of the last two year,.” Karl said.
