PORT ORANGE -- A former Warner Christian Academy teacher was charged earlier today by two police departments with unlawful sexual activity with a minor for allegedly having sex with a 17-year-old student over several months in local motels before she abruptly resigned earlier this month.
Cynthia Horvath, 45, was first charged by Port Orange police and booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on bail of $10,000.
Port Orange police then contacted Daytona police who subsequently filed similar charges against her and an additional bail of $10,000 was set.
Horvath resigned Oct. 12 from the private high school in South Daytona on Oct. 12 after she was confronted by school officials.
She was arrested shortly after noon at the Daytona Beach Wal-Mart after Circuit Judge Patrick Kennedy signed a warrant for her arrest.
Warner administrators contacted South Daytona police which led to an investigation with the other two police departments during which police learned the teacher and the 17-year-old boy had sex between June and September at several motels in Daytona Beach and Port Orange, including a sexual encounter in a car at the same Wal-Mart, Port Orange police Detective Capt. Frank Surmaczewicz said.
