Perhaps you have noticed kids being a little happier this week compared to last week. On the other hand, possibly you heard the enormous sigh of relief come from middle and high schools across the state on Thursday March 11. It was due to this little thing called FCAT.
The feelings towards FCAT are mutual by teachers and students, and let us just say most are not in favor of it.
Starting in fourth grade, you begin taking the statewide test. You prepare all year for the test, which in some cases, ss levels below your knowledge level. Now, it is understandable why the state would want to know how we are doing, but final exams should be efficient enough.
For the most part, they were painfully easy with a challenge thrown in here and there. We will get our scores back towards the end of the school year and although some are confident, others are worried. If a high enough score is not met for reading, some will not be able to begin or continue with foreign language.
The latest news on the test is that President Obama is planning to eliminate standardized testing.
As for the students, we will just have to wait and see next spring.
