NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- An 18-year-old man was arrested earlier today on attempted burglary and grand theft charges after allegedly trying to break into the BP Express Mart on Sugar Mill Drive by going through the roof, New Smyrna Beach police said.

"K-9 Officer (Abraham) Diffin noticed that the lights were off inside the BP Express Mart. He stopped to investigate and observed the suspect, later identified as Brandon Thomas, removing shingles from the roof of the business," police Sgt. Valerie Joyce wrote in her media report. "The vehicle and tag that Thomas was using had been reported stolen out of Edgewater on October 17th."

Thomas, whose address was not included in Joyce's media report, was placed under arrest in the 3 a.m. incident at the BP Express Mart, 751 Sugar Mill Drive, on charges of attempted burglary, grand theft auto and larceny. A check of the business revealed that entry had not been made. Joyce said.

Thomas was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EDITOR'S NOTE: FINAL CANDIDATE'S DEBATE

The third and final "Citizens Candidate Debate" for mayor and Zone 1 commissioner will be held 6:30 TONIGHT at the Brannon Center, 105 S. Riverside Drive, sponsored by the Public Watch Committee, with exclusive video coverage by NSBNEWS.net. This is your last chance to hear from the candidates in one setting before the start of Early Voting.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Up first is the debate between Zone 1 Commissioner Randy Richenberg and challenger Judy Reiker. The two will face questioning from NSBNEWS.net, followed by questons from the audience and then square off against each other.  Then comes the debate between Mayor Sally Mackay and challenger Judy Reicher. The same format will follow.

What we're working on:

# Mayor's race takes a nasty turn with "anonymous" supporter for Mayor Sally Mackay bashing her opponent, Adam Barringer, in a series of e-mail postings. We'll have reaction from both camps.

# Could this be NSB's Watergate? The City Commission voted to cut $14,000 from the budget for water and coffee for its 240-plus employees in the new fiscal year that began Oct. 1, yet the elected officials have sparkling cold bottled water for themselves. We'll have a report in our "Making the Grade" segment.

# We are continuing to develop our In-Depth Report: "Show Me The Money," in which we break down the salaries of the city's 247 employees. Some salaries have doubled and even tripled in just seven years.

# NSB Police Cmdr. William Drossman recalls the dedicated service of a K-9 unit killed in a traffic accident in our Cover Story.

# Check out our revised rotating headline reports in U.S./World news, Hollywood Gossip and Sports Wire.

LOWEST AD RATES
# Advertising is welcomed and appreciated to keep greater New Smyrna Beach's only daily on-line newspaper going. We recognize that with the recession, advertising dollars are limited, which is why we have the lowest rates of all media outlets serving this community and a powerful following in the community as demonstrated by the "hits" in excess of 1,200 daily on NSBNEWS.net, your around the clock Internet source "where journalism lives."
