NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- An 84-year-old Edgewater woman refused to give up her money to a hooded teenager who approached her in her car at the K-Mart plaza on State Road 44, earlier today, even though he told her he had a weapon under his sweatshirt, after which he ran off, New Smyrna Beach police said.

Cecilia Battersby was not injured in the 1:51p.m. incident May 2.

"(She) stated the suspect approached her while she was sitting in her parked vehicle," police Sgt. Eugene Griffith said in a report. "The suspect touched the victim’s shoulder and while implying to have a weapon under his sweatshirt, he demanded money. The victim refused to give the suspect any of her property and he fled on foot northbound. The suspect was last seen wearing a maroon hoodie sweatshirt pulled over his face and hands."

The attempted robber was described as a white boy, between the ages of 13 and 15, with a slender build.

This was the third time in three days that a robbery or attempted robbery had occurred along the commercial stretch of S.R. 44, the previous two being actual armed robberies of the GNC store and the Sprint Store on consecutive days, each by grown men.
