NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Dick Barr, 79, has been a fixture at Pancakes in the Park for the twice-a-year fundraiser for the New Smyrna Beach Historical Museum for one reason: "The sausages."
"The pancakes are good," Barr said, "but the sausages are the best."
So how many did he have?
"Just two," Barr said. They are wonderful as always, but I have to watch my diet."
City Commissioner Jack Grasty does, too, but he had no problem smothering his golden brown flapjacks with maple syrup.
Some 600 people showed up at Old Fort Park, listening to country music played by a few banjo players, checking out a few antique cars and enjoying a Saturday in the park.
Mayor Adam Barringer was among them, noting the quaint atmosphere felt like "being in Mayberry."
Aunt Bea and Opie weren't there, but there were people of all ages, some with cute dogs on leashes that enjoyed whatever morsels they could get their drooling tongues on.
The event raised about $3,500 for the museum, said its president, Rick Newell.
