Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport increased 7 percent in January compared with the same period last year.
Statistics show 36,881 passengers arrived and departed through the county-operated airport. This compares with the 34,514 travelers recorded in January last year. For the 12-month period through January, 501,345 passengers traveled through the airport, compared with 430,137 passengers in 2010, a 17 percent increase.
The traffic increase in January follows an ongoing upswing starting in late 2009 and continuing through all of 2010 when traffic increased 18 percent over 2009, said Rick Karl, airport director.
“The airport’s two major carriers -- Delta Air Lines and U.S Airways -- have been offering competitive fares and have scheduled larger capacity aircraft and more available seats over the next several months which should help local travelers,” he said. “We are extremely pleased with January’s ongoing upward trend in traffic and remain optimistic that as the economy continues to improve, airport passenger traffic also will improve throughout 2011.”
