It's back to guns again

ORMOND BEACH -- Okay, we’re back to guns again. A horrible scene in New York City on Friday left two dead, including the gunman, and nine others wounded. A man, distraught because he had been laid off, brought a gun to work and shot the vice president of the company in the head right outside the Empire State Building.

Unfortunately, nine other people were wounded. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg immediately reassured New Yorkers and tourists alike that this was not an act of terrorism.

In Mayor Bloomberg’s eyes no one should have a gun for any reason. He wants to disarm all of America.

I have two problems with Bloomberg's ant-gun stance:

1) Disarming all German Jews created the conditions leading to the Holocaust because they couldn’t defend themselves from their own government;

2) The NYPD officers are thought to have fired at least some of the rounds that wounded the nine people.

Let’s look at Chicago under the leadership of two anti-gunners, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

“Chicago is on pace to eclipse Washington, D.C. as the murder capital of the nation in 2012,” according to Frank Miniter, writing in America’s 1st Freedom. Chicago’s homicide rate rose 38% in the first six months of 2012, during which 250 people were killed.

Mayor Emanuel was angry over District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan calling Chicago’s laws “unconstitutionally void for vagueness.” Emanuel’s response was “The reason I’m trying to pass tougher gun laws down in Springfield is because it’s an essential complement to your overall crime strategy.”

I’ve never understood how disarming law-abiding citizens helps lower crime rates. So let’s look at the other side. 71-year-old Samuel Williams has a concealed carry permit. “He used his weapon in an Internet café when thugs entered and demanded money.

Under Florida law, a person is allowed to use deadly force if he or she fears death or serious injury to themselves or others. As long as the person isn't committing a crime and is in a place where he or she has a right to be, they are considered to be acting within the law.”

How do you think the 30 people who were in the café felt when this was over? Do you think any of them would agree with Bloomberg or the Chicago mayor?

We have a Constitution and Bill of Rights that have worked for us for more than 236 years. But we are no longer the freeest country in the world. Our rights are more in peril more than ever from a runaway government and a legislative branch controlled by lawyers, not citizens, who desire to serve the public and return to their lives.

Again quoting from America’s 1st Freedom, “McDonald, a Democrat and longtime hunter, had by then been a married, law-abiding resident of Chicago for more than 50 years. He wasn’t an activist. He was a person trying to protect his family and live the American dream.

“ I was feeling the poor blacks who years ago had their guns taken away from them and were killed as someone wished," McDonald explained. "That was a long time ago, but I feel their spirit. That’s what I was feeling in the courtroom. … This lawsuit, I hope, will allow me to bring my handgun into the city legally. I only want a handgun in my house for my protection."

McDonald understands what Police Superintendent McCarthy doesn’t: Gun control laws preventing him from bearing arms are comparable to the Black Codes, not today’s federal gun laws.”

Even logic and facts don’t deter anti-gunners according to America’s 1st Freedom, "When handgun bans were enacted in Ireland and Jamaica in 1972 and 1974, respectively, murder rates doubled over the following decade," economist John Lott showed in his seminal book "More Guns, Less Crime."

And take the more recent example in England and Wales, where handguns were banned in 1997: deaths and injuries from gun crime more than doubled over the next seven years.”

The entire world is aware that every head of household in Switzerland is given a gun and taught how to shoot it and abide by the laws of the land. They have a near zero crime rate.

Why don’t the liberals in America get this? Because it’s about control not about guns.
