Headline Surfer caught up with the Deltona official for an exclusive interview on the 24/7 Internet newspaper's online show, "The Sunday Conversation."

Rich Gailey of DeBary, candidate for County Council 5 / Headline SurferPhoto for Headline Surfer / Rich Gailey of DeBary, shown here, is County Council dist. 5 incumbent Pat Northey's challenger in the Nov. 6 elections.

Northey won the Aug. 12 primary with 4,772 votes or 48.48 percent with Rich Gailey of DeBary finishing second with 2,959 votes or 30.38 percent to force the Nov. 6 runoff in the general elections. Stony Sixma finished out of the running with 2,059 votes or 21.14 percent.

Had Northey garnered 50 percent plus 1 vote, she would have won re-election then and there.

Headline Surfer interviewed Northey following Volusia County Chair Frank Bruno's recent retrospective at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach on his nearly eight years in the leadership post. Bruno, of Ponce Inlet  is running as the Democratic candidate against State Rep. Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange, for the newly created dist. 8 state Senate seat that includes parts of Volusia, Lake and Marion counties.

Bruno is the senior member of the county council with 20 years in, followed by Northey with 18 years of elective service.

"Experience" more than anything else is what Northey sees as her advantage in this non-partisan election, though as a registered Democrat, she is keenly aware, the Republican Party of Volusia County, is investing its resources in Gailey's campaign.
