NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- There is no escape from the long arm of the law nor are there any special privileges when you are the publisher of the city's 24/7 Internet newspaper. I was stopped just before midnight for "running a stop sign." Actually, what I did was turn right at the stop sign without coming to a complete stop in my Audi TT.
Regardless, I'm guilty as charged. Except I wasn't charged with anything, just a verbal warning. You'll find my write-up in the 24 police report that we run every day from the New Smyrna Beach Police Department. I'm no different from anyone else and I expect no special treatment or favors. I made that clear to the cop in a polite, but sincere way. He said the warning was standard procedure.
I hold myself to a higher standard as someone who is, by virtue of career standing, a public figure. And that means full transparency.
