Report grim: At least 27 confirmed dead
EDGEWATER -- I am in shock and not sure what to even say about the school shooting in Sandy Hook, Ct. I come from Connecticut and lived in Sandy Hook immediately before I moved here in 1968.
Back then, it was then a very small town like Oak Hill. Everyone knew their neighbor and we all went to Newtown to shop and go to church and school since at that time those things did not yet exist in Sandy Hook. I was stunned to hear the news anchor say the shootings were at a Sandy Hook elementary school of all places.
Here the parents were sure their kids were safe in the classrooms and some sick person decided it was the day he should go kill as many kids and adults as he could. As I write this, no one yet knows why he did it or the exact total of the dead.
One woman, who was in a meeting about her second grade child with the principal, vice principal and the school psychologist and who volunteers at the school herself, was quoted as saying they heard the shots of “Pop! Pop! Pop!"
She said the principal, vice principal and psychologist went out into the hall and only the vice principal managed to crawl back into the room with a gunshot to her leg. This woman speaking said she was under the table calling 9-1-1.
How can we stop these kinds of things happening in our schools?
We don’t want our kids going through iron bars and x-ray machines everyday for school. We don’t live in a police state nor do we want to so what can be done to protect them? I
really feel if I had children today I would home school and socialize them some other way.
Of late, we have had bus drivers let kids beat other kids on the bus and do nothing. And we've had bus drivers putting our kids in danger with their driving through red lights, many abuses of school children have come to light as well.
How parents explain and cope with these things especially to elementary school age children I just don’t know. My prayers are with all those people involved and the whole area of Newtown and Sandy Hook. If there were something I could do to help them I would be doing it.

I guess what I am doing is trying to get you to be aware of the happening and the daily dangers we all face. Be as prepared as possible and hold your loved ones close. You never know what may happen in the next minute. God help us all!
