APOPKA -- The motorist behind the wheel of a Mustang was a mere three years older than the 16-year-old boy on a bicycle, whose body was thrown onto her windshield before bouncing off as she fled the scene of the deadly hit-and-run.
But by Tuesday morning, the long arm of the law caught up with 19-year-old Kristy Nandoo, found herself behind bars on charges of vehicular manslaughter and leaving the scene of the fatality.
"(If) she not left the crash, she probably wouldn't be facing any charges," Montes said of the seriousness of the alleged crime of hit-and-run.
Edward Fernandez, 16, of Apopka was trying to cross the northbound lanes of SR 436 on his bicycle around 8:20 p.m. when he was hit by Nandoo's 2000 Ford Mustang, Montes said.
When troopers pulled over Nandoo's vehicle, they found her 17-year-old boyfriend behind the wheel. But it didn't take investigating troopers long to realize that after the crash, she called her boyfriend and they met up to switch the driving roles, Montes said.
Troopers actually found her driving the boyfriend's 2008 Ford pickup truck.
And though Montes couldn't get into more specific details, she was adamant that it was Nandoo who was driving the Mustang when the boy was struck. Besides the shattered windshield, there was red paint on the Mustang, the same as that of the bicycle, the FHP spokeswoman said, reiterating, "The Mustang definitely hit that boy."
Edward, a nionth-grade student at Apopka High School, was pronounced dead at Florida Hospital Apopka.
