Winter weather in Atlanta hurt flights here, but increased fan travel interest in Rolex race had positive impact on travel
Photo for Headline Surfer® / DAYTONA BEACH -- Passenger traffic at Daytona Beach International Airport increased 1 percent in January compared with January of last year, Volusia County officials saids.
During January, 44,605 passengers flew in and out of the county-operated airport.
This compares with 44,170 travelers recorded in January, 2013. For the 12 months ending in January, traffic increased 4 percent to 608,412.
Airport officials said the traffic increase in January would have been higher had there not been numerous flight cancellations at the end of the month because of severe weather affecting the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport that had a significant impact on Delta Air Lines, Daytona Beach International Airport’s majority air carrier.
"Flight cancellations were somewhat offset by a well-attended Rolex 24 hour race at Daytona International Speedway January 25 and 26, additional seats offered by U.S Airways, and stable passengers loads," said Stephen Cooke, director of business development for the airport.
