By DARLENE VANNEDGEWATER, Fla. -- With President Trump having ordered military strikes against Syria in response to Assad gassing his own people, I wonder why anyone would actually think we as a people would survive all-out nuclear war should it come to that.
We went through the Cold War with the former Soviet Union for decades and finally rid ourselves of that misery only to be projected to be in another one with the Russian Federation. At least that is the prediction we so often hear pundits professing.
The launch of missiles from the sea by the US, France and the United Kingdom struck Syria's facilities where the poison gas was being manufactured. While Russia issued a condemnation, that was the extent of it. At least this time around.
The retaliation by the US and two of its European allies in France and the United Kingdom on war-torn Syria will not stop the barrage of attacks on the poor innocents of that country from within because the cause of their ills is the person who remains in power with the backing of Russia -- dictator Bashar al-Assad. And no one has tried to or done anything about him. He is a monster. Our radical misguided president is not much better, though he has not used chemical weapons against Americans.
I have difficulty watching the news because these days most of it is all about Trump, something he tweeted, who was fired or quit today, what he is threatening to do to another country and on and on. I wish we had a "good.news station" that we can watch to get a break from the world crises that we have no choice but to let him involve this country in. Trump continues to drag our country’s name through the mud with his outrageous tweets and the steps he is taking to supposedly make American great again are making America a laughing stock to the world. He has made promise after promise that he has then changed his mind about or ignored altogether. He has made everyday living harder for the middle class and the poor.

I don’t see a whole lot of difference between middle class and any other class except the rich which Trump and his regime caters to: Many who were just beginning to actually get much-needed help and a leg up have been tossed aside and stepped on by his rescinding of things like health care and higher wages. We spend billions to help other countries yet countless communities in this country have too many homeless and hungry people, the vast majority of those suffering, innocent children.
But Trump sends National Guard troops to guard the Mexican border where his Wall is being prepared. The money to do that could be building badly-needed infrastructures and help feed the poor and get them some job training or help to buy a home with that job which makes them taxpayers instead of tax drains. It makes me furious the things he thinks are important that are not.
I never thought in my lifetime I would see the ugliness that is a daily occurrence in the White House as is the case since Trump took office. It’s a darn shame. My ancestors who fought the two wars to end all wars must be rolling in their graves as they watch what they fought for wither and die.
