Sanford cops conducting high visibility enforcement patrols over next 6 months to get motorists, bicyclists & pedestrians to comply with traffic safety laws along SR 17-92

The still image above is of a double-fatality on April 24, 2017, in which two men in a GMC Envoy were killed on U.S. 17-92 when their SUV attempted to turn left onto Airport Boulevard and was struck by a Kia Sorrento, causing the Envoy to roll over. The driver of the Kia was not seriously injured. Sanford police say the 17-92 artery is among the deadliest in the city.

SANFORD, Fla --  Seminole County ranks among Florida's top 25 counties in traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists.

Sanford cops plan to commit more patrols to stem the tide against these grim stats with a six-month sustained commitment in getting motorists to comply with safe traffic laws "to protect the safety of these most vulnerable road users," Sanford police PIO Bianca Gillett told Headline Surfer. As such, Sanford is starting to conduct "High Visibility Enforcement" details or HVE this month and continuing through May in the area of SR 17-92. This area is over-represented in traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists, Gillett explained.

HVE details are funded through a contract with the University of North Florida in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation’s focused initiative to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. The goal of this enforcement effort is to increase awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.

Enforcement efforts will focus primarily on education to drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. But motorists be forewarned: Violations deemed egregious that may result in warnings or citations depending on the circumstances.
