DELAND, Fla. -- Two days after Tuesday's primary election had incumbent Derrick Henry winning re-election outright for his seat as Daytona Beach mayor with 50.1 percent of the votes in a three-way race, the Volusia County Canvassing Board officially ordered a recount.
That recount begins 2 p.m. today at the Volusia County Department of Elections, 1750 S. Woodland Blvd., in DeLand. The public is welcome to attend.
"The first unofficial results in the City of Daytona Beach Mayor race indicate that of the 12,177 total votes cast; Ms. Sherrise Boyd received 2,280 votes (18.72%), Mr. Derrick Henry received 6,101 votes (50.10%), and Mr. Ken Strickland received 3,796 votes (31.17%)," Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis said in an email media alert to Headline Surfer. "Therefore, per Florida Statute a recount is ordered. The difference of the total of Ms. Boyd and Mr. Strickland’s percentages, and Mr. Henry’s percentage of votes is less than one quarter of a percent; warranting a machine recount."
Lewis added if the machine recount indicates that a manual recount is required, the manual recount will begin following the machine recount.
