Edgewater Fire-Rescue seeks donations of toys, food and money for needy families

EDGEWATER -- In 2003, Edgewater Fire-Rescue, in conjunction with Edgewater Fire-Rescue Association, began to expand its Operation Caring program. For many years, both organizations had been active in providing food and toys to children and families during the holiday season through the Operation Santa program.

Interim Fire Chief Stephen Cousins describes Operation Caring as “a year-round program which will include providing assistance to residents and visitors who may be devastated by a crisis.” This year as in years past, that “crisis” can include a family that is not able to provide Christmas gifts or a holiday meal for their loved ones.

Edgewater Fire-Rescue staff works in conjunction with the local charity, Gifts of Love, which conducts the eligibility screening and provides the list of needs to the department. So far this season, approximately 400 families with nearly 200 children have been determined to need assistance. This is double the number of children served by Operation Caring last year, said Lt. Jill Danigel, fire marshal and fire-rescue spokeswoman.

"Sadly, while the number of children and families requiring assistance has doubled, the donations have not," Danigel said, adding Edgewater Fire-Rescue Association President Peggy Cousins is becoming concerned that the donations may not meet the need.

Donations of new, unwrapped toys are being accepted at both fire stations (Station 55 – 1605 South Ridgewood Avenue and Station 57 – 2628 Hibiscus Drive). Wrapping supplies will also be accepted.

There is also a need for non-perishable food and personal care items that will be giving to families with children and the elderly. Monetary donations are accepted as well – checks can be made Edgewater Fire-Rescue Association (EFRA).

Donations of food, toys and money will be accepted without deadline. All food and toys will be dispersed prior by the end of the day on Dec. 25. Any remaining monetary donations will be placed into the year-round Operation Caring fund to meet crisis related needs that arise throughout the new year.
